Why do teeth need to be Extracted?
Although permanent teeth were ideally meant to last a lifetime, there are many reasons why a tooth might end up needing to be removed. Either through gum disease, decay, a fracture beyond what we can repair, overcrowding of the teeth in the mouth, badly positioned teeth, trauma, or an infection, these can all lead to the need for a tooth extraction. A typical and common example of a poorly positioned tooth that often requires extraction is the ‘third molar,’ or wisdom teeth.
Do you Suffer from Anxiety at the Thought of a Tooth Extraction?
We understand that for most people, the thought of having their teeth extracted induces fear and anxiety. At Health Plus Dental Centre, we are here to walk you through the extraction process and help you feel as comfortable as possible throughout your appointment. Our experienced team will complete a thorough examination of your mouth, which includes digital X-rays used to help diagnose the type of teeth removal required. Since each and every case is different and based on your own unique situation, your Health Plus dentist will review with you exactly what to expect after the tooth extraction. They will then provide you with detailed instructions on how to care for your mouth after the procedure. For those who suffer from fear and anxiety during dental procedures, ask our dental team about our office’s Sedation Dentistry options so you can get the care you need.
What are Wisdom Teeth?
Wisdom teeth are the third set of molars in the back of your mouth, spotted on X-rays, that usually come in between the ages of 17 and 25. Most people have them removed for one of the following reasons:
- They’re impacted. Because they’re so far back in the mouth, wisdom teeth may not always come in normally. They sometimes become trapped in your jawbone or gums, which can be painful.
- They come in at the wrong angle, which may mean they press against your teeth.
- Your mouth isn’t big enough, and therefore your jaw has no room for an extra set of molars.
- You have cavities or gum disease. You may not be able to reach your wisdom teeth with your toothbrush or dental floss.
